A large part of this is due to the fact that I completed the Bachelor of Music Program at Boston University in 1963, but also as an educator (Brown University, 1970-75) as well as having observed the liberal arts curriculum in person (Brown University) and believe that educational programs should incorporate studies in art along with different subjects. This is not surprising coming from an ethnomusicologist that earned a MA from 1967 and earned a Ph.D. from UCLA. It is not surprising that the ethnomusicology department located at UC Berkeley, where I was a professor from 1975-1976 sits in a College of Letters and Science's Department of Music. I enjoy pursuing multiple interests and focusing on the bigger view. I love teaching undergraduates (majors and non-majors), for whom I have written three textbooks-Music in India: Music in India: Classical Traditions, Thinking Musically as well as Music in Japan: Experiencing Music, Expressing Culture) as well as graduate students. In addition, I have a variety of periods where I engage in mainly academic pursuits along with times when I incorporate administrative work to the mix (Chair of the Department of Music 1983-88, Dean of Undergraduate Advising 1992-1998, Chair of The Deans of the College of Letters and Science 1994-98, Chair of the Group in Asian Studies Since 1999 and currently as Chair of the Department of Music again).
